A Moment with the Prelate

There was once a great Mansion built upon a high hill, its foundation laid true and square, its walls plumb, and its gates set to the four winds. Travelers from every direction saw its light shining at night, for the Master of the House desired that all who sought truth, virtue, and fellowship might find their way to its door.

When a pilgrim first approached, he found the Outer Court, a place of preparation. Here he learned to lay aside the dust of the road, his prejudices, his haste, his pride. This was the room of Beginnings, where the first lessons of humility and brotherly love were taught. Many lingered here, content with simple truths, but the Master whispered, “There is more within.”

Passing through a narrow archway, the pilgrim entered the Hall of Labor, where craftsmen shaped rough stones into perfect ashlars. This was the room of Discipline, where the working tools of life, faith, hope, and charity were placed in his hands. He learned that no man perfects himself alone, and that the chisel of adversity often reveals the hidden beauty within.

Beyond this hall lay the Chamber of Reflection, dimly lit and silent. Here the pilgrim confronted his own heart. It was the room of Truth, where illusions fell away and the soul stood bare before God. Many turned back at this threshold, for the room demanded honesty, repentance, and courage.

But those who pressed on found the Sanctuary of the Word, a room filled with Scripture, prayer, and the symbols of the Craft. Here the pilgrim discovered that all true knowledge points upward, and that the Great Architect reveals Himself to the sincere seeker. This was the room of Light, where understanding dawned like the morning star.

Finally, the pilgrim came to a door marked with the sign of the Cross and Crown. Entering, he found the Chamber of the Commandery, the room of Service and Sacrifice. Here the lessons of the Mansion reached their fulfillment. For the Master of the House taught that knighthood is not a title but a calling: to defend the helpless, uphold truth, and walk the narrow way of Christ with courage and compassion.

At the end of the journey, the Master Himself appeared and said:

“In My Father’s house are many mansions;
I go to prepare a place for you.”
(John 14:2)

The pilgrim understood at last:
Each room of the Mansion was not merely a place but a stage of transformation.
Each doorway was a threshold of growth.
Each lesson prepared him for the next.

And the Mansion itself, vast, radiant, and filled with purpose, was the life of a Christian Mason, shaped by the Craft, perfected by the Cross, and illuminated by the Light of Christ.
